History David Ford first began traveling to Russia in the winter of 2001 with Josh McDowell Ministry's "Operation Carelift". "The first time I entered an orphanage in St Petersburg, Russia I saw the desperation of the children living there. This experience had a major impact on my life. I knew at this time that I wanted to continue to try and help make a difference in the lives of these children. After much prayer I felt that God was calling me to move to Russia. I have now been here for 5 years and have become involved in helping orphan kids to survive in life as they get older. We teach them about God's love as well as offer "Life Skills Training" to help them to survive in their most vulnerable time in life, after they have left the protection of the orphanage.

Facts The number of children entering into the Russian orphanage system has been constantly rising since 1991 and the fall of the Soviet Union. Children are being abandoned at a rate of 100,000 per year to the state. The recent economic crises is making this situation worse. Alcoholism is one of the main causes of children being abandoned. Once a child is in the orphanage, they do not receive a proper education, nor are they taught any social life skills to adapt to independent life in society.
